Ladies’ Club
A Message From Our Captain
It is an honour and privilege to be Captain of the Ladies Club in 2024. Together with my committee I look forward to working on behalf of all our lady members.
I am also looking forward to working with Captain Aiden for the good of our club and hope to maintain the Club’s ethos, to be open and approachable to all members and to welcome new members and guests.
I would like to thank my committee for their support and good wishes and also the good wishes and encouragement of all our members as I take on the role of Captain.
I sincerely want to thank all the ladies who give of their time so generously, serving as Trustees, on the Management Committee and on the various subcommittees within the club.
To our team managers and interclub players, thank you for your time and dedication.
Hopefully, weather permitting, we will have a busy year of golf. As well as our weekly weekend competitions we will have scrambles and some 13H competitions during the summer months.
I would like to extend a warm welcome to all our visitors to Dooks and hope they enjoy our excellent and challenging course which is kept in great condition by a team of greens staff led by Head Green Keeper Micheal.
Our Ladies Club is open for new members and to any ladies who may be considering taking up golf you can be assured of a warm and friendly welcome in Dooks.
Finally, I would like to wish you all health, happiness and a great year of golf in 2024.

Captain’s Profile
When did you first start playing golf?
I joined Dooks G.C. in 1989 but it was 2013 before I started playing golf. The Ladies Committee ran a Get Into Golf programme called the “Swallows” so it was thanks to the Swallows that I started playing golf and I now play on a regular basis.
What is your favourite course?
Apart from Dooks I enjoy playing Waterville with its remote location, beautiful scenery and wide fairways. The views from the clubhouse are an added bonus.
What do you think is the biggest challenge facing the game of golf?
The pace of play is an ongoing issue. You have to allow over four hours for 18H so the lure of other sports and activities are attractive alternatives for people who are time poor. I also think the introduction of the WHS handicapping system continues to cause frustration.
What do you like most about golf?
As a sport I think it is fantastic that it can be played and enjoyed by all ages. It can be played on your own or as part of a group. It’s also a game that families can play together and I think the social aspect is a very important part of golf, there is always someone in the clubhouse that you can join for a coffee or a drink.
What was your lowest & highest handicap?
My starting handicap was 36 and I now play off 19.1…it’s a work in progress.
Can you remember your best golf shot?
I’m still waiting to play my best golf shot!
Can you remember your worst golf shot?
My short game is the weakest part of my game so all my bad shots are too numerous to mention. I always try to finish well on the 18th so I can forget about the bad shots and finishing well means I am eager to come back again!
Who is your favourite sportsperson? Why?
I admire David Clifford and his huge impact on the world of GAA. Apart from his fabulous ability as a player he is also a wonderful role model for young people.
What piece of advice would you offer anyone thinking of taking up the game of golf or just starting out?
To start with, get some lessons so that you learn correct techniques and if possible join a Get Into Golf programme or join with friends as it helps to start off playing golf with people of your own standard, it gives you confidence and then you can progress to playing with more experienced golfers. Above all enjoy the challenge!
What is your favourite golfing memory?
Shane Lowry winning his first major title at the Open Championship in Royal Portrush in 2019.
